Dr. Ira Smith was the medical doctor who attended to Eliza Pirrie. He was in love with Eliza and was jealous of what he perceived as Audubon's attention to his student Eliza. Smith complained to Mrs. Pirrie that Eliza was too weak to continue with her studies under Audubon's tutoring. Audubon complained that Eliza was lazy and not as sick as everyone believed. Eventually, this caused a rift between Audubon and the Pirries. Dr. Smith later married Mary Ann Smith, then Pirrie, Eliza's sister.
